Something has gone wrong with the education system. That is, if you want people to become independent thinkers. If, on the other hand, you were a government that wants people to not be independent thinkers, then the education has worked well.
Over the years of my own experiences in schools, having private clients of all ages, and teaching for a couple of community colleges I noticed the problems that everyone else notices: remembering things for the test but not actually knowing anything, people just waiting to be given orders and tasks rather than having initiative, people not being able to function without step-by-step directions, kids not caring or wanting to learn, depression, anxiety, anger, resentment, lack of curiosity, and more.
I also noticed that there are solutions to these problems that have been known for a long time. There are unique schools in the US that succeed, the famous writer Tolstoy ran a successful school for the poor, Henry Ford started multiple successful schools, Benjamin Franklin designed and started good schools, Quintilian in ancient Rome was a successful teacher with successful students, Pliny the Younger in ancient Greece had good advice on private tutors and parents founding schools.
Yet, each of these places has similar problems. Unique schools in the US today have trouble competing against the so-called free government schools that people are already forced to pay taxes to, Tolstoy's school was raided and shutdown by the government, Ford's schools aren't the type of schools that the government wants to exist, Franklin's school was corrupted by the board, ancient Rome and ancient Greece had strict school regulations thousands of years ago. Why? Because it's important from a government's perspective to control what people think and know, and the best way to do that is to start controlling what people think and know when they are young.
Over the years of studying these different ideas I've put together a method and a system that fixes the obvious problems. One problem is that almost no schools really involve the parents in education decisions. I've fixed that. Another problem is that kids aren't engaged in what they don't care about. I've fixed that. Another problem is that they don't learn how to negotiate and present their own ideas in writing and speaking. I've fixed that. I have incorporated the best of ancient rhetorical presentation, modern academic writing, alternative subject choice, and involving the parents. It's a better system.
